BESPOKE, HAND-CAST MAPS

These cast maps are an all new collection of three dimensional reliefs, cast by hand from Jesmonite, a type of eco-resin that is a cross between concrete and plaster. The resin is 100% non-toxic and can be cast in a wide variety of colours. Each piece is poured and reinforced before being sanded and polished by hand. Each map is made to order, picking out the minute details of London in relief. Black (opposite), terracotta (pictured above), grey and white casts are available as standard, but I can colour match each cast to a specific colour if requested, just get in touch.

HOW THEY ARE MADE

The design is firstly laser etched onto a sheet of clear acrylic using a laser cutter. A mould of this is then made using high strength silicon rubber, which results in a flexible sheet containing an impression of the map. This impression - or mould - is then used to make the final cast, created by pouring Jesmonite in layers over a reinforcing glass fibre mesh. After curing, the cast is then sanded and polished before being fitted into a bespoke timber frame, made specifically for these casts in Brighton.

FRAMING & hanging

Each cast map comes with a plywood backing and secure ‘button fixings’ for a reliable mechanical connection to your wall. If you wish, bespoke box frames can be fabricated for the casts, constructed from birch plywood or coloured valchromat. For more details on frames and fixings then please just get in touch and I can advise on the appropriate method of fixing for your wall.

Custom Cast Maps

Currently only a London version is available, although custom locations will be considered (there is a considerable setup time for new versions as a brand new mould will have to be produced). Just get in touch and I can talk you through the process.

SHIPPING

The casts will be shipped in their frame so as to protect them in transit, wrapped in foam and bubble wrap protective sleeves. Collection from the studio in Brighton is also possible.
